Guided Home

$0.00

Referencing craft traditions across quilting, marquetry, and geometric surface design, Guided Home is a straw marquetry artwork that feels both architectural and textile-like. Made from dyed rye straw in pinks, browns, and grays, a four pointed star medallion radiates outward through concentric star forms, with a single blush-pink square at the center. The directional lay of each straw section catches light differently, giving the surface a tactile shimmer that shifts as you move past it. Presented in a walnut float frame, 24in x 24in.

When I made this piece I was reading The Wayfinder by Adam Johnson, a novel set in the pre-colonial Tongan islands. In the book, a Wayfinder was someone who could navigate the ocean by the stars. I found it fascinating that in the great vastness of the sea, by looking to the sky and finding the star associated with their island, home was never lost.
