This straw marquetry piece feels architectural in its geometric form yet organic and textile-like. Inspired by craft traditions such as quilting, marquetry, and geometric surface design, I used dyed rye straw in shades of pink and grayish-brown to create a four-pointed, layered star medallion with a single blush-pink square at the center. The grain of each piece of straw is laid to catch the light differently, so the surface shimmers and changes as you walk by. Framed in a walnut float frame, it measures 24 by 24 inches.
While making this piece, I was reading Adam Johnson's The Wayfinder, a novel set in the pre-colonial Tongan islands. In the story, a Wayfinder can navigate the ocean using the stars. I was fascinated by the idea that, even in the vast sea, people could look up, find the star linked to their island, and always know how to get home.
